I recently delved back in to the world of Pokémon Yellow and started a brand new journey to become a Pokémon master. My first intro to Pokémon on the Game Boy was Pokémon Blue, one of the games that defined my childhood. As a big fan of the Anime, this game let me travel around the Kanto region on my own adventure and trying to catch every Pokémon that I could find. When Pokémon Yellow was released, I was able to relive the journey again but with a very special friend by my side.

Pika Pika!

Pokémon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition is very similar to both the Red and Blue Game Boy games but it has a few key differences. This version bears more of a resemblance to the original Anime series as your character starts out with a Pikachu instead of choosing between Charmader, Squirtle or Bulbasuar. Pikachu also travels around with you outside their Pokéball just like the Pikachu from the anime. Some other well known characters from the Anime series make an appearance in Yellow such as Nurse Joy, Officer Jenny, and the famous Team Rocket trio Jessie, James and Meowth. With the TV show taking the world by storm, it was a great decision by Nintendo to release an updated version of the original games as it was a commercial success which went on to sell millions of copies during its life span.

About to do battle.

It was quite some time since I properly got stuck into a playthrough of Pokémon Yellow so I decided to delete my current save file and start a brand new adventure. Every time I start a new playthrough of this game I have to take Ash over to his TV where he has a brief go on his Snes. After Ash has done some gaming, then it is time to really start the adventure. Then when you Pikachu joins your team, I think it is great that you have to win his respect and love through raising properly. Another key factor that resembles the anime is the fact that you collect all 3 original starter Pokémon. Charmander, Squirtle and Bulbasuar are always part of my team when playing through Pokémon Yellow, with Pikachu being the leader of the pack. That makes 4 out of 6 Pokémon that I use every time but with the last 2 spaces, I try to choose different Pokémon for each playthrough just to keep things fresh. At the time of typing this I am just over 10 hours into the game, I have just gotten my 4th badge from Celadon City and I am about to try my hand at the Rocket Game Corner in the hopes of bagging a Porygon. As it stands my current team consists of Pikachu, Ivysaur, Wartortle, Charmeleon, Pidgeoto and Drowzee but I would like to have Porygon in there as I think it is one of the coolest looking Pokémon. I still have a lot of adventuring left in me before I become a Pokémon master but I will not rest until I beat the Elite Four and Gary to become the very best like no one ever was.

A happy Pikachu.

Becoming a Pokémon master is a difficult journey but when it comes to catching them all, that is a quest that will truly test your metal. I’ll admit that I have yet to complete the Pokedex and catch’em all but I am currently on the hunt for a game link cable which will enable me to finally get that coveted and elusive diploma at Celadon City. Until then I will continue on my journey, beating every opponent that I come across and raising my Pokémon to be as powerful as possible.

Pokémon was such a huge part of my childhood, from the TV show, games and even the first movie, it is always an enjoyable nostalgic trip whenever I decide to revisit it. I never got into any of the newer series of the show which in turn never spurred me on to try any of the future games that were released after Yellow. I have seen some footage of Pokémon Gold & Silver and I have to admit, they do intrigue me. Maybe after I finally catch them all in Pokémon Yellow I will finally be ready to move on from the originals.

I would love to know who do you choose when playing Pokémon Yellow, do you follow in the footsteps of Ash Ketchum and go with the original starter Pokémon or have a ragtag bunch from across the Kanto region? And if for some reason you have never played either Pokémon Red, Blue or Yellow then I suggest you check them out and have a Pokémon adventure of your own.
